THE VINAYA PITAKA

The Vinaya pitaka is one among the three pitakas (baskets); the other two are Abhidhamma pitaka and Sutta pitaka.  It was very instrumental in the study of the ancient Indian culture during the time of the Buddha. The culture, character and nature of the Indian people during that time can be found in the Vinaya pitaka.  In addition, it can be seen in the Vinaya how the Buddha, when forming Buddhist organization, made sure that there is harmony between the monks of various castes and from different localities.
For the advancement of an organization it is essential to have rules and practices.  The rule for a Buddhist organization is the Vinaya or monastic code.  Buddha had laid down the rules in this code of conduct.  If we study the majority of the rules we can see that the rules were laid down so as to be free from the criticism and censure of people of that time.  It is true that religious code of conduct was introduced so that people who do not worship Buddhism will begin to worship it, and for those who already worship it to have more respect.
I understand that 'Vinaya' in the present day serves as an 'ART OF LIVING' for those who aspired to attain spiritual goals.  For me it is a noblest personality development course, in modern days.
One who practices Vinaya pitaka as Buddha asked to practice; automatically he can also achieve proper position and get property in the world to live happily.

TWO KINDS OF RAPTURES AND JOYS

In the case of praise, the Buddha prohibits his disciples not to be pleased and joyful.  But the Buddha, in some suttas, spoken in praise of rapture and joy that arise over the triple gem.  It is true; he has praised it.  But that is the rapture and joy connected with renunciation.  Here the intention is the rapture and joy that arise connected with worldliness, the kind that arises by saying; “our Buddha, our Dhamma, and our Samgha”.  For it creates an obstacle to attaining the first jhana, etc.  This rapture and joy are associated with greed, and greed is similar to anger.

The greedy man does not know the meaning

The greedy man does not see the Dhamma,

Only a mass of blinding gloom remains

When greed over power man.

Greed is an agent of harm,
Greed is a disturbance of mind
The danger produced on account of this-

That the people do not understand

THE ONLY WAY

      In Mahasatipattanasutta, the Buddha declares:

“The only way that leads to the attainment of purity, to the overcoming of sorrow and lamination, to the end of pain and grief, to the entering of the right path, and to the realization of nibbana is the eightfold Noble path, including the four foundations of mindfulness”.

So, to combat and conquer the defilements, we must undertake the threefold noble training that constitutes the eight-fold noble path.  We must begin with the training of morality to drive away the gross and inflated defilements (vitikammakilesas) and suppress them not to arise in the mind.  The purity of morality (silavisiddhi) serves as the foundation of meditation.

Then we have to undertake the training of concentration to combat the moderate defilements (pariyuttanakilesas)that have arises in the mind and agitate the mind.  We must try to attain the right concentration (samma Samadhi).

Then we have to undertake purification of mind using the concentrated mind which is tranquil and calm.  It is to remove the latent defilements (Anasuyakilesas).  Then we can realize the ‘nibbana'.
